The Thermal Grizzly AM5 Lapping Tool in detail
The AM5 lapping tool is designed for grinding the heat spreaders of AMDs AM5 processor series. The tolerances of the AM5 lapping tool allow the heat spreader to be ground down gradually by 0.4 mm, up to a total height of 1.6 mm. When using the standard AMD mounting frame (SAM), a maximum grinding of 1.0 mm is planned until the intermediate levels are reached.

A further 0.6 mm is only possible if the CPU is mounted with a suitable AM5 contact frame, for example (product coming soon). The steps of the AM5 lapping tool are diamond milled to achieve high transparency. This makes it clear when grinding which levels have already been reached and which have not.

Lower temperatures thanks to grinding of the heat spreader
The US content creator and tech YouTuber JayzTwoCents was able to achieve up to 5 degrees Celsius lower temperatures with slightly higher boost clocks of all cores with a Ryzen 9 7950X using a 360 mm AiO by grinding the heat spreader. In combination with the Kryonaut Extreme thermal paste, temperatures that were even 10 degrees Celsius lower could be achieved (compared to commercially available thermal paste).

Even with a moderate overclock of all cores of the Ryzen 9 7950X to 5.4 GHz, the test system remained 4 degrees Celsius below the temperature limit of 95 degreesC.

These temperature improvements through grinding the heat spreader are due, among other things, to the heat spreaders of the AM5 platform. The heat spreaders introduced with Ryzen 7000 are thicker than the AM4 heat spreaders to ensure that AM4 compatible CPU coolers remain compatible with the AM5 platform. In addition, the surface of the Ryzen 7000 heat spreader is significantly smaller at around 910 mm² compared to AM4 at 1,300 mm².

Note on compatibility with AM5 motherboards:
Please note that grinding the CPU will void the warranty. To ensure the largest possible contact area between the IHS and the base plate of the CPU cooler, the latter should also be sanded.
