With the Intel Optane Series Intel presents compact M.2 modules, which are equipped with the new 3D XPoint memory cells and therefore no longer access NAND flash. The modules are mainly used as a system accelerator and can store frequently used data in this 16 GB version. This means that, in particular, extremely large HDD data carriers reach or exceed the transmission speeds of SSD hard disks. Comparatively large SSD hard disks are in most cases much more expensive, which is why the investment in a large desktop HDD with Intel Optane module can be worthwhile.

The Intel Optane Series modules are a cost-saving alternative to high-capacity, high-capacity SSD media, which in most cases comes at a very high price. However, it should be noted that the Optane modules themselves do not represent a separate data carrier and are only used as a system accelerator. Especially in combination with large HDD hard disks the need for a lot of storage space and fast transmission speeds can be covered, without an equivalent SSD with appropriate storage space expensive to be bought.
This version of the Intel Optane Series has the M.2-2280 form factor and is connected to the motherboard via the PCIe 3.0 x2 interface. The module is unilaterally equipped with 3D XPoint memory cells and offers 16 GB capacity. In combination with Intels Rapid Storage software, important files are detected and access to them is speeded up by being temporarily stored on the Optane module. The module achieves read speeds of up to 900 MB / s and write speeds of up to 145 MB / s. The latency of 9 and 320 microseconds (read / write) is particularly low, whereby the reactivity can be significantly improved.
