The B550 chipset is the heart of the MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk Max WiFi motherboard and has been specifically optimized for Ryzen 3000 series (Matisse) CPUs. B550 motherboards support all features of third- and fourth-generation Ryzen processors, most notably the PCI Express standard version 4.0 (PCIe 4.0). PCIe 4.0 is backward compatible and can be used with all expansion cards from previous generations. Additionally, the motherboards support up to 128 GB of RAM with a guaranteed clock speed of 3,200 MHz. Depending on the motherboard, significantly higher clock speeds are possible through overclocking. The B550 chipset also allows for processor overclocking.

The MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk Max WiFi is an ATX motherboard and features two PCI Express slots for graphics cards. The motherboard provides a PCIe 3.0 x1 slot for additional expansion cards. The four RAM banks support up to 128 GB of DDR4 memory with a clock speed of up to 3,200 MHz and can even handle clock speeds of up to 5,100 MHz via overclocking.

The AM4 motherboard provides two M.2 slots. Both slots are connected via four PCI Express lanes and accommodate expansion cards up to 80 and 110 mm (2280 and 22110), respectively, and are also connected via the SATA 6G protocol. M.2 SSDs with the advanced NVMe Express (NVMe) protocol and a connection via four PCI Express 4.0 lanes support data transfer rates of up to 8 GB/s, making them twice as fast as PCI Express 3.0.

Modern ports and RGB LED lighting
The MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk Max WiFi features one USB 3.1 Type-C port, two USB 3.0 Type-A ports (blue), one USB 3.1 Type-A port, and two USB 2.0 Type-A ports on the I/O panel. The USB Type-C port is reversible, is particularly thin, and USB ports with this standard generally support fast charging for smartphones and tablets. USB 3.1 achieves maximum speeds of 10 Gbps per port. An HDMI and a DisplayPort port are available for CPUs with integrated graphics.

This B550 motherboard also offers features such as a Wi-Fi module, a 2.5 Gigabit LAN port (Realtek RTL8125B), on-board sound (Realtek ALC897 audio codec), reinforced PCIe slots, and numerous internal headers. Also included are overclocking features, an optimized power supply, diagnostic LEDs, and a power and reset button.
