The Thermal Grizzly Ryzen 7000 Direct Die Frame in detail
The AMD Ryzen 7000 Direct Die Frame from Thermal Grizzly is a CPU mounting frame for mounting Ryzen 7000 processors without the integrated heat spreader. By omitting the heat spreader, the CPU cooler can be mounted directly on the processor's chiplets, which means that significantly lower temperatures are possible during operation.
This is not only interesting for extreme overclockers on the hunt for records, but also for gamers and content creators.
Why should I remove my Ryzen 7000's heatspreder?
The heat spreader of the Ryzen 7000 processors is very thick, which is partly due to the compatibility with older CPU coolers for the AM4 socket. The unnecessary thickness of the heatspreader reduces the thermal conductivity, so that the CPUs are operated at very high temperatures of around 95 degrees Celsius. By removing the heatspreader ("heading", "delidding"), the CPU cooler can be mounted directly on the Ryzen 7000 CPU's chiplets, which can drastically reduce temperatures.
In order to avoid damaging the sensitive chips and to avoid operational problems (e.g. RAM), the Ryzen 7000 Direct Die Frame replaces the socket actuation mechanism (SAM) of the mainboard.
Better temperatures thanks to the decapitated CPU
Cooling the processor is important for gaming PCs and desktop workstations, so that they are not slowed down during rendering operations, for example, or enable the highest possible FPS when gaming. Silent PCs for multi-media applications also benefit from better heat dissipation from the processor. In addition to a good cooling solution, PC enthusiasts use the "heads" of CPUs to optimize heat dissipation.
When a CPU is decapitated, the processor's heat spreader is removed. Often this is done to replace the thermal conductors used by the manufacturer with higher quality thermal compounds or liquid metal such as Thermal Grizzly's Conductonaut before the heatspreader is reassembled. With the so-called Direct Die, the heat spreader is completely omitted, so that the base plate of the CPU cooler has direct contact with the CPU.
Benefits of direct-die cooling on Ryzen 7000
When the CPU cooler is mounted directly on the CPU chips, the heat generated during operation of the processor is dissipated directly to the cooler and does not have to be transferred through the heat spreader first. This makes heat dissipation more efficient and the CPU is better cooled. The task of the AMD Ryzen 7000 Direct Die Frames is to protect the exposed chiplets of the Ryzen 7000 CPU. Without a direct die frame, the function of the CPU can be impaired by the contact pressure of the CPU cooler. Problems with the main memory are particularly common here. In the worst case, the CPU can become unusable.
