This is useful, for example, if you often want to install and remove different graphics cards and do not want to damage the board slot, or would like more space when commissioning the expansion cards.

It may also be necessary or useful to place PCI-Express expansion cards in unusual places in the case of modding projects or housings deviating from the common ATX standard. A particular advantage of a riser cable is the ability to position graphics cards vertically and thus mount them parallel to the mainboard. This allows the cooler of the card to be fully effective.
