Since the "Comet Lake-S" processors require a new socket due to the optimized power supply, the Intel Socket LGA1200 is used on the 400 series mainboards. The Gigabyte Z490 Gaming X AX motherboard in the ATX form factor offers two PCIe x16 slots and three PCIe x1 slots for plug-in and expansion cards. As a high-end motherboard, the Gigabyte Z490 Gaming X AX also supports multi-GPU setups via AMD Crossfire / XDMA. The other features of the mainboard also include a striking cooler design and integrated RGB-LED lighting.

Up to 128 GB DDR4 memory in dual-channel mode can be used in the four DIMM slots. The Z490 chipset supports clock rates of up to 2,933 MHz by default, but the Gigabyte Z490 Gaming X AX enables the operation of RAM kits with up to 4,600 MHz via OC! Two M.2 slots for PCIe / SATA M.2 SSDs and six SATA 6G ports allow storage drives to be connected. The M.2 slots are connected to the chipset with four PCIe lanes and support the NVMe protocol, which enables data transfer rates of almost 4 GB / s. M.2 PCIe SSDs are up to eight times faster than SATA 6G SSDs!
