 B550 mainboards support all features of the Ryzen processors of the third and fourth generation, especially the PCI Express standard in version 4.0 (PCIe 4.0). PCIe 4.0 is backward compatible and can be used with all expansion cards from previous generations. In addition, the mainboards support up to 128 GB of RAM with a guaranteed clock speed of 3200 megahertz. With overclocking, much higher clock rates are possible, depending on the mainboard. The B550 chipset also enables the processor to be overclocked.

The ASUS Prime B550M-A is a micro ATX mainboard and has a PCI Express 4.0 slot with full x16 connection for graphics cards. The motherboard provides two PCIe 3.0 x1 slots for additional expansion cards. The four RAM banks support up to 128 GB DDR4 RAM with a clock rate of up to 3200 megahertz and can even handle clock rates up to 4800 MHz via OC.

Two M.2 slots are provided by the AM4 mainboard. One slot is connected to the processor with four PCI Express lanes and supports PCIe 4.0 and SATA 6G for drives up to 110 mm in length (22110). The second M.2 slot is connected to the chipset with four PCI Express lanes and supports PCIe 3.0 and SATA 6G for drives up to 80 mm in length (2280).
