Details

Through the MSI gaming app, the MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Gaming X + 8G 11 Gbps can switch to "OC" mode. The OC mode increases the base clock to 1,708 MHz and the boost clock to 1,847 MHz. The memory clock is (in the OC mode) at 5.555 MHz (effectively 11.110 Mhz) and for the power supply of the 27.7 cm long graphics card, a 6- and 8-pin PCIe connector is required. The power supply should supply at least 500 watts.

For NVIDIA's GPU Boost 3.0 to take full advantage, it's important that the electronics of the board remain as cool as possible, so MSI relies on the popular, very quiet and effective Twin-Frozr cooler. In the case of the semi-passive Twin Frozr VI, the rotor blades of the two 10 cm Torx fans have been reworked, which blow fresh air through large aluminum heat sinks and several nickel-plated heatpipes and even stop rotating completely below a certain load stage, which is why the radiator design Then absolutely silent.

The black-red GTX 1080 Gaming X + 8G 11 Gbps from MSI has a LED-illuminated MSI-lettering. The RGB LED lighting can be adjusted via the MSI gaming app. The black backplate gives the GTX 1080 additional stability and is decorated with a black-stylized MSI gaming kite.

The GeForce GTX 1080 "11 Gbps" in detail

The GeForce GTX 1080 high-end graphics card with Pascal architecture is a milestone in NVIDIA's graphics card history. Built in the 16-nm FinFET process, the GP104 graphics chip of the GTX 1080 makes a big step forward in computing performance as well as in energy efficiency, as the "Pascal" GPU architecture features extensive improvements over the predecessor "Maxwell". The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 in the revised "11 Gbps" revision also uses optimized 2nd generation GDDR5X video RAM with a memory clock of 5,500 MHz (effectively 11,000 MHz).

These memory chips are not overclocked 10-Gbps modules, but new native 11-Gbps modules, which at the same frequency with significantly less signal noise than the older 10-Gbps chips can offer. The 8GB GDDR5X video memory of the GTX 1080 "11 Gbps" is connected to the GPU via a 256-bit memory interface, which achieves a memory bandwidth of 352 GB / s. In addition to the video memory, the 2.560 CUDA cores of the GP104 graphics chip are responsible for the brutal gaming power of the GeForce GTX 1080.

The GTX-1080 graphics card family supports DirectX 12 and current gaming technologies, including NVIDIA GameWorks, Warp, Stereo-X, VR-Audio, PhysX and SMP (Simultaneous Multi-Projection). The latter is supported in version 4.0 and offers great advantages, especially for VR, curved displays and multi-display setups. Several monitors were viewed by games as a kind of broad monitor, rendering the GPU just a viewport and creating distortions.

Thanks to SMP, Pascal now supports 16 simultaneous viewports, which allow a much more realistic display on several monitors, on curved displays or in 3D operation. Especially VR benefits from the new technology, because two viewports can be rendered in one run. By using multiple viewports, the rendered image also comes with a smaller number of calculated pixels, which greatly improves VR performance.

Despite the extremely high computing power and memory expansion with 8GB GDDR5X VRAM, the GeForce GTX 1080 "11 Gbps" with a TDP of only 180 watts, which is compared to the direct predecessor GTX 980 only 15 watts more - at significantly higher speed. Thanks to the reworked power supply of the GTX 1080 PCB, the energy efficiency of the GTX 980 increases by a whole six percent thanks to the new five-phase supply (in the reference layout) of the GPU and the various optimizations on the PCB.

The GeForce GTX 1080 "11 Gbps" has the latest connections. For the image transmission of 4K / Ultra HD resolutions at 60 hertz, a total of two DisplayPort 1.4 and two HDMI 2.0b connections are available, the latter of which have HDCP 2.2 and thus can send and receive encrypted signals (4K-Blu -Rays / 4K streams). Alternatively, the GTX 1080 has a DVI-D output (dual link).

In order to exploit the full potential of the card in the future, new drivers from NVIDIA or MSI should be downloaded and installed at regular intervals.
