The SATA 6Gb / s standard, together with the AHCI protocol, has long been the bottleneck when it comes to building and deploying fast SSDs. With the latest SSDs in a compact and very fast M.2 standard, which includes a SATA 6Gb / s data line for compatibility, but generally uses the much faster PCI Express lines - four of them. While the gross data rate for SATA is at a maximum of 600 MB / s and net of it about 550 MB / s can be used as actual data throughput, there are already four PCIe 2.0 lanes with a gross capacity of 1,000 MB / s and with current mainboards with PCIe 3.0 even nearly 2,000 MB / s - more than three times as fast as the fastest SATA standard. In addition, when using an NVMe SSD, the speed boost comes with the new protocol, which, however, is only used via PCIe and not via SATA.
PCI-Express 2.0 is available on virtually every motherboard, PCIe 3.0 is also increasing - but M.2 ports on the board itself are in short supply, and it's usually just a single slot. Very often, this is also connected to only two PCIe lanes, which significantly limits the speed potential. The solution: this adapter! With the adapter offered here, it is possible to put an M.2 SSD into operation via a PCI Express slot of the mainboard. M.2 SSDs can be installed in the usual 2280 format. With the PCIe slot, the adapter with its support of PCIe 1.0 / 1.1, 2.0 and 3.0 is very flexible.
During assembly, the SSD is pressed in between the full-surface passive cooler and the rear cooler with thermal pads and optimally cooled. To the outside, a silicone insert protects the built-in SSD from environmental influences, which is additionally illuminated all around in a warm orange. The lighting can be switched on or off or it can light up when the SSD is in use. An additional SSD logo on the back of the board (facing ATX cases) illuminates when the SSD is active. The highest quality was ensured for all components: The PCIe contacts are coated with hard gold and the printed circuit board is completely gold-plated. The M.2 connector uses brand quality from Amphenol or Kyocera. To ensure high signal quality and high data rates while avoiding read errors, the PCIe lanes are impedance-controlled. In addition, the contacts and the PCB are completely gold plated.
