This fourteen-terabyte version of the Ironwolf HDD series (16 TB = 16,000 GB) has been specially designed for continuous operation, and developers were particularly keen to use video surveillance systems. The hard drive has to do two things: first it has to be extremely reliable, second it has to be fast to record video streams lossless.

Both are given at the Seagate Ironwolf. The 3.5-inch HDD is rugged and durable, and is therefore being promoted by Seagate with an enormous MTBF of one million hours. On the other hand, thanks to its 256 MB cache, SATA 6G interface and 7,200 rpm, the HDD is very fast (maximum 210 MB / s continuous data throughput).

The plate is also filled with helium and hermetically sealed. Helium has only one-seventh of the density of air, so replacing air with helium in a hard disk drive significantly reduces the air turbulence caused by spinning disks. It also minimizes power consumption and temperatures, allowing Seagate to offer more discs in a traditional 3.5-inch form factor.

This design offers a 50% capacity gain while still saving up to 23% energy. So the hard drive consumes only 7.3 watts in operation and runs about four to five degrees below the temperature of standard hard drives. With 5.9 W in idle and 0.8 in standby mode, the remaining power consumption of the Ironwolf HDD show relatively low.

Note: Please note that this 26.11 mm hard drive model is slightly higher than most other 3.5 inch HDDs. If necessary, measure whether the hard disk can fit into your PC, NAS or external hard drive enclosure.
