Overview

Exactly two years after the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B appeared in early 2016, there is an update of this version of the mini-board, which now has the suffix "+". The innovations in this version of the popular mini-computer are certainly more extensive than the name Plus suggest. Not only was the clocking of the processor cores increased, but the network capabilities were also significantly expanded.

Details

The features of the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B + at a glance:
BCM2837B0 SoC from Broadcom with LAN7515 from Microchip
Four ARM Cortex-A53 processor cores with 1.4 GHz clocking
Gbit LAN with a maximum of 315 MBit / s
Cypress CYW43455 with IEEE 802.11 ac
WLAN with a maximum of 47 Mbps in the 2.4 GHz and 102 Mbps in the 5 GHz band
1x HDMI, 4x USB 2.0, micro SD slot, audio out
40 pin GPIO interface
Even faster thanks to 1.400 MHz quad-core processor with modern technology
The third version of the famous Raspberry Pi 3 Model B + single-board computer receives the even faster Broadcom BCM2837B0 system-on-a-chip, which continues to combine all the chipset functions and accommodates both processor cores and the graphics unit. On the one hand, the higher performance of the Raspi 3 B + results from the 1.2 MHz to 1.4 GHz CPU clock of all four processor cores. Furthermore, it is the ARM Cortex-A53 cores with ARMv8 architecture that also support 64 bits, which give the computer dwarf its nevertheless gigantic achievement and make it itself as Multimedia Center operationally. So that the chip does not overheat, there is the first time a heatspreader on the SoC.
NEW: Gbit-LAN and WLAN ac
The second major innovation of the Raspberry Pi 3, however, is undoubtedly the long-awaited support for Gbit-LAN. However, as Microchip's LAN7515 LAN chip shares the data line with the USB 2.0 controller, only about one third of the nominal Gbit LAN speed is achieved. Nevertheless, the transmission speed is three times as high as in the predecessors of the small computer. The support for WLAN experienced a comprehensive update: IEEE 802.11 ac is supported for the first time. Thus, the Raspberry Pi not only works as before in the 2.4 GHz band, but also in the 5 GHz band. Thanks to the new Cypress CYW43455 chip, the transmission speed at 2.4 GHz has been increased from 36 to 47 Mbit / s, in the 5 GHz band it is 102 Mbit / s. Instead of Bluetooth 4.1, the next version 4.2 of the wireless technology is now supported and thus also Bluetooth 4.2 Low Energy (BLE).

Thanks to numerous expansion interfaces, such as the GPIO port, camera and display interface or the four USB 2.0 ports, a wide variety of projects can also be realized with the Raspi 3. The extent of possible applications ranges from, for example, LED-based or LC displays to control units for WLAN printers, self-triggering wildlife cameras, hot air balloons, drones, home-grown mobile phones, smartphones, tablets, compact cameras or routers, electronic musical instruments, home automation, sensors equipped with sensors Air pollution measuring devices up to the voice-controlled coffee machine.

But apart from robotics and embedded projects, the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B + is also used by home users as a media center, thin client or server in addition to the intended application areas, such as learning programming languages or acquiring hardware knowledge. With the pocket computer creativity knows no bounds! The integrated VideoCore IV graphics unit with H.264 / MPEG-4 video acceleration for HD material is still on board and can be expanded to the VC-1 and MPEG-2 codecs for a small license fee if required which also gives the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B + the unrestricted suitability as a talented multimedia player.

The GPU clock on the Raspi 3 also stays at 300 MHz for the 3D processing units and 400 MHz for the video acceleration unit. Also, the more modern architecture of the new Broadcom SoC comes with various Linux distributions as the operating system in question and even adapted ARM versions of Windows 10 are supported. On a (optional) microSD card as a system drive, for example, the well-known Raspbian (Debian Wheezy), Snappy Ubuntu Core or OSMC and OpenElec (Kodi / XBMC variants) can be stored.

The new Raspberry Pi 3 Model B + brings all the improvements of its predecessor and thus still has four USB 2.0 ports, the space-saving microSD slot, the 4-pin 3.5 mm jack audio output with integrated composite Video output and the extended 40-pin GPIO header. The available memory, however, remains unchanged at 1024 MB LPDDR2 RAM. In addition, the optimized power supply with higher efficiency has been retained, so that more peripherals can be connected.

Compatibility Note: Due to the identical screw and connector configuration, the new Raspberry Pi 3 Model B + is fully compatible with Raspberry Pi 2 Model B and Raspberry Pi 1 Model B + housings and expansion boards (HATs)!
