Novel technology ensures enormous performance boost

The reason for the high read and write speed of the Optane SSDs from Intel is the construction of the 3D-Xpoint memory. Nonvolatile memory combines the advantages of NVM with those of volatile RAM - hence the name Crosspoint, or Xpoint for short. Material is used on which information is stored by phase change.

A prerequisite for the high efficiency is again a high packing density of the memory cells. With 3D technology, they are stacked vertically one above the other in the memory chips, similar to the 3D NAND memory cells. This provides a huge boost in reading and writing speed as well as long-term durability.

The Optane SSD 900p needs modern interfaces

To take full advantage of the speed of the Optane SSDs, they are connected to the system via PCIe.Gen3 with four lanes and either connected via the eSATA successor SFF-8639, which now bears the name U.2, or to the NVMe interface M .2 clamped. The Optane SSD 900p offered here has the form factor of a conventional 2.5-inch SSD with a U.2 interface. Intel adds the Optane SSD 900p in addition an adapter cable for the M.2 interface on motherboards.

The extremely fast sequential data transfer rates are 2,500 GB / s read and 2,000 GB / s write speeds. The IOPS are an incredible 550,000 (reading) and 500,000 (writing), which makes the disk in dealing with smaller data particularly powerful. Add to this the extremely low latencies of 10 microseconds during read and write operations. Even with low command queue and parallelization, traditional NAND SSDs are dropped. The performance remains constant at a high level.

The lifetime of the Optane SSD 900p is also astonishing: it is a whopping 5,110 TBW and 1.6 million hours. Intel provides a manufacturer's warranty of 5 years.
