Overview

The breakout cable offered here is required if you want to connect SATA drives with special RAID controller cards. Often the expansion cards have one or more sockets for plug type SFF8087, also known as Mini-SAS. Advantage of this interface is, among other things, that the electrical signals from up to four SATA (6G) hard drives or SSDs can be transmitted over this single connection. Often on the boards of the RAID controller cards too little space to solder so many SATA ports, as can be controlled by the controller.

Here is the mini-SAS interface with SFF8087 is often the method of choice. At such a jack plugged in, there is the other end of the cable offered here from four normal SATA data connectors. The cable or the individual strands are a total of about 50 cm long and executed in red, while the plug itself come in black. It is important to note that this is a cable that is suitable for OCR transmission mode (reverse / straight through). Depending on the application also identical-looking cable may be needed with OCF mode (reverse). Both modes are NOT compatible.

So please make sure that in your application scenario actually an OCR cable is required and consult before buying therefore possibly the manufacturer of your device, type of cable is required to connect drives!
