The Cougar Phontum utilises an ingenious speaker design consisting of large 53 millimetre drivers and two large chambers situated behind the chassis which allows for a particularly defined frequency output. The drivers are embedded in the closed-style cans and are made from extra stiff and strong graphene to enable a distortion-free output at even high volumes. This also helps to ensure that games and music sound true to life.

With its light steel head support and perforated orange band allows the Phontum to be flexible enough to fit any shape and size of head, without exerting unnecessary and uncomfortable pressure. The flexible noise-cancelling gooseneck microphone is attached to the left can and this can also be removed for use on the road. Speaking of portability, the narrower of the two earpad sets is designed to help make the headset as compact and convenient to use on the road as possible. The thicker ear cushions are made from exceptionally soft memory foam.

The headset is connected via two possible methods, either using a 1,2 metre long braided cable with a 4-pin mini jack connector for carrying audio- and microphone outputs, or a 1,8 metre long adapter cable that includes an in-line control along with its own microphone/audio connector. This enables the headset to be used with a whole range of devices including desktops, laptops, smartphones, tablets, or consoles that offer the requisite connectors.
