The ASUS WS X299 SAGE / 10G in detail
The ASUS WS X299 SAGE / 10G is an extensively equipped workstation mainboard in E-ATX format. The elegant, black board has seven PCIe-x16 slots, four of which are connected to the chipset with full 16 lanes and three are electrically connected with eight data lines. This means that even NVIDIA 4-way SLI or AMD 4-way CrossFireX configurations are possible when using a 28 or 44 lane CPU.

Equipped with a total of eight DIMM slots for DDR4 memory, a CPU with 28 or 44 data lines allows all slots to be used in quad-channel mode and up to a maximum capacity of 128 GB. A CPU with 16 lanes supports the dual-channel operation of four slots with a maximum capacity of 64 GB. Officially, DDR4 modules with up to 2,666 MHz can be used, but after overclocking, much higher clock rates are also possible: up to 4,200 MHz!

For data carriers, the board provides extensive equipment with two M.2 slots for particularly fast NVMe M.2 SSDs and a U.2 slot, which is also connected via PCIe 3.0 x4. A total of eight SATA 6G connectors for 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch hard drives and SSDs (including RAID support) are also available. The M.2 ports are connected to the chipset via four PCIe lanes in the 3.0 standard and, in combination with the NVMe protocol, enable a data transfer rate of just under 4 GB / s. This means that M.2 PCIe SSDs are up to eight times faster than SATA 6G SSDs!

External connections
There are numerous useful connections on the I / O panel mainboards that should make life easier for the user. In addition to a new USB 3.1 Type C port, which is particularly thin and can finally be inserted on both sides, the board has another, downward compatible USB 3.1 port. Thanks to the ASMedia USB 3.1 controller, maximum speeds of up to 16 Gbit / s can be achieved, which is more than three times as fast as conventional USB 3.0 connections. Of course, the board for input devices and other gaming peripherals also has four USB 3.0 ports.

The ASUS WS X299 SAGE / 10G also has two Intel X550-AT2 Gigabit LAN ports for unlimited network connections. The ALC S1220A codec and a total of five audio ports ensure decent sound. A total of six fans can be connected directly to the board.
