The ASUS ROG Maximus XII Extreme in detail
The ASUS ROG Maximus XII Extreme motherboard in ATX form factor offers two PCIe x16 slots and one PCIe x4 slot for plug-in and expansion cards. The two x16 slots are connected with a full 16 lanes, the third x4 slot with two lanes. As a high-end motherboard, the ASUS ROG Maximus XII Extreme also supports multi-GPU setups via NVIDIA SLI / NVLink and AMD Crossfire / XDMA. Other features of the mainboard also include a striking cooler design and integrated RGB LED lighting. Four headers for RGB strips allow the connection of further RGB LED components.

Up to 128 GB DDR4 RAM in dual-channel mode can be used in the four DIMM slots. The Z490 chipset supports clock rates up to 2,933 MHz, but the OC enables the ASUS ROG Maximus XII Extreme to operate RAM kits with up to 4,700 MHz! A total of four M.2 slots for PCIe / SATA M.2 SSDs and six SATA 6G connections enable data storage media to be connected. Two of the M.2 slots up to 22110 can be connected to a DIMM slot with the included ROG-DIMM.2 adapter and are then directly connected to the CPU with four lanes. The other two M.2 slots are also connected to the chipset with four PCIe lanes and also support the NVMe protocol, which enables data transfer rates of just under 4 GB / s. This makes M.2 PCIe SSDs up to eight times faster than SATA 6G SSDs!

The ASUS ROG Maximus XII Extreme has a USB 3.2 port on the I / O panel with a Type-C socket. This innovative USB Type-C port is particularly thin and can be inserted on both sides. USB 3.2 or USB 3.1 Gen 2x2 achieves maximum speeds of 20 Gbit / s per port and USB ports with this standard generally support the quick charging function of smartphones and tablets.
