Details

The legendary Athlon processors finally helped AMD achieve a breakthrough almost 20 years ago due to their excellent performance and attractive pricing and successfully dominated the market for years. It was these AMD Athlon CPUs that broke the sound barrier of 1.0 gigahertz (1,000 megahertz) clock frequency for the first time in 2000. Nowadays, the venerable brand name no longer serves high-end chips, but adorns progressive entry-level APUs such as the AMD Athlon 3000G.

APUs (Accelerated Processing Unit) are processors with a particularly powerful integrated graphics unit. The processor concept, originally developed under the brand name AMD Fusion, is ideal for low-budget gaming systems and compact multimedia PCs. The Raven Ridge platform on which the AMD Athlon 3000G is based relies on processor cores of the "Zen +" architecture, which is also used in the APUs and CPUs of the AMD Ryzen 2000 series. "Raven Ridge" combines a processor with a graphics unit based on the "Vega" architecture into an impressive overall package.

The AMD Athlon 3000G 3.5 GHz 2-core processor at a glance:
AMD Athlon
2 "Zen +" cores with 3.5 GHz CPU base clock
Free Multiplier Overclocking (unlocked)
4 threads thanks to simultaneous multithreading (SMT)
Cool and quiet: only 35 watt thermal design power (TDP)
Integrated Radeon Vega 3 GPU with 3 CUs / 192 shaders
H.265 / HEVC + VP9 hardware video decoding
Large unified cache memory: 1 MB L2 & 4 MB L3
Highly efficient 14+ nanometer FinFET transistors
AVX2 instruction set extension for vector calculations
Two AES units for reliable data encryption
Modern AM4 platform with DDR4 RAM (dual channel)
Note: Tray version without CPU cooler!

The AMD Athlon 3000G is an entry-level processor from the Raven Ridge generation with two physical CPU cores that, thanks to simultaneous multithreading (SMT), can process two threads at the same time, so that the number of computing cores with the two additional virtual Cores effectively doubled to four. The two-core processor works with a base clock of 3.5 GHz per core and the silicon is lithographed in the 14-plus-nm FinFET manufacturing process with stacked transistors (also called 3D transistors).

The space gained on the processor die thanks to the greatly reduced structure sizes enables the integration of a total of 1 MB level 2 cache (2x 512 KB) and 4 MB level 3 cache as well as the powerful Radeon Vega 3 GPU with 192 shaders in 3 Compute Units (CUs). As with the Ryzen APUs / CPUs, the modern AM4 format is used as the motherboard socket, so that Ryzen CPUs and Ryzen / Athlon APUs can be used on the same mainboards.

AMD Radeon Vega - Highly efficient graphics chips for the desktop
The special thing about the APUs of the "Raven Ridge" series is the integrated graphics unit based on the Vega architecture. This merges the CPUs with "Zen +" architecture introduced in 2017 and the graphics chips with Vega architecture introduced in the same year to form an efficient and powerful APU. In addition to many optimizations compared to older AMD graphics chips, four new features were introduced with Vega: a High Bandwidth Cache Controller (HBCC), Rapid Packed Math (RPM) of the Next-Gen Compute Units (NCU), a New Programmable Geometry Pipeline and an Enhanced Pixel Engine.

The AMD Athlon 3000G APU is equipped with the Radeon Vega 3 GPU. In this expansion stage, the graphics chip has three compute units with a total of 192 shaders. The GPU base clock is 1,100 MHz. The Athlon APU supports fast DDR4 RAM with a clock rate of 2,667 MHz (cannot be changed) and the integrated GPU in particular benefits from this significantly. The combination of "Zen +" CPU architecture and "Vega" GPU also impresses with its low thermal design power (TDP) of only 35 watts.

Hints:
An AM4 mainboard is required to use an AMD Athlon 3000G APU.

Danger:
To operate a Socket AM4 APU of the Athlon series, it may be necessary to carry out a UEFI / BIOS update, for which a CPU / APU supported by the motherboard depending on the UEFI / BIOS version in the delivery state may have to be used .
