Details

This has the further faster BCM2837 system on a chip from Broadcom, further unites all chipset features in and hosts both processor cores and the graphics unit. The higher performance of Raspi 3 results partly from the 900MHz increased to 1.2 GHz CPU clock all four processor cores that support for the first time and 64 bit, and secondly by the significant increase in per-clock performance of modern ARM Cortex-A53 cores with ARMv8 architecture.

Even faster thanks to 1,200-MHz quad-core processor with modern technology
The Raspberry Pi Foundation indicates that the new Raspberry Pi 3 alone in 32-bit mode, about 50 to 60% faster counted as the direct predecessor and about 10 times faster than the original Raspberry Pi, which is still a slow single-core processor with old ARMv6 instruction set and 700 MHz clock had to do. This enormous performance difference makes itself at media center applications noticeable, but is especially in applications in desktop operating systems and calculations great impact. The available memory remains unchanged at 1024 MB LPDDR2 RAM.

NEW: Integrated wireless chip for n WLAN and Bluetooth 4.1
However greatest innovation of the Raspberry Pi 3 is undoubtedly the long-awaited integrated WiFi wireless connection thanks to the additional BCM43438 chips. With its support for 802.11b / g / n wireless LAN in the 2.4 Ghz band and Bluetooth 4.1 Low Energy (BLE) the connectivity of the mini-computer can be drastically increased and precious USB ports stay open. The built-in wireless antenna is located directly onboard, what the status LEDs have been placed on the board something. An external antenna can not be connected.

Thanks to numerous expansion interfaces like the GPIO port, camera and display interface or USB 2.0 ports, it is also possible with the Raspi 3 different projects realized. The extent of possible applications ranges for example soldered LEDs or LCDs via control units for wireless printer, automatically triggered wildlife cameras, hot air balloons, drones, self-made mobile phones, smartphones, tablets, compact cameras and routers, electronic musical instruments, home automation, equipped with sensors air pollution measuring devices through to voice-controlled coffee machine.

But Away from the robotics, embedded projects is the thin client or server used Raspberry Pi 3 of home users in addition to the envisaged applications, such as learning programming languages or the acquisition of hardware knowledge, like a media center. With the hand-held computer, creativity knows no bounds! The integrated video core IV graphics unit with H.264 / MPEG-4 video acceleration for HD material is still on board and can be expanded for a small license fee as required to the codec VC-1 and MPEG-2 are thus also the Raspberry Pi 3 unrestricted suitability is awarded as talented multimedia playback device.

Another new feature is the also increased GPU clock when Raspi 3 of now 300 MHz in the 3D processing units and 400 MHz for the video acceleration unit rather than above 250 MHz respectively. Also for the modern architecture of the new Broadcom SoCs come various Linux distributions as the operating system in question, and even customized ARM versions of Windows 10 are supported. In an (optional) microSD card as a system drive the known Raspbian (Debian Wheezy), Snappy Ubuntu Core or OSMC and OpenELEC (Kodi / XBMC variants) can be stored for example.

The new Raspberry Pi 3 brings all the improvements of its predecessor with and thus also has four USB 2.0 ports, the space-saving microSD slot, the 4-pin 3.5 mm jack audio output with integrated composite video output and the extended 40-pin GPIO header. In addition, the optimized power supply was maintained with greater efficiency so that more peripherals can be connected. The temperatures of the SoC benefit from these measures with consistently low levels. The power consumption of 3 Raspi board remains despite stronger CPU at a maximum of about 5 watts and can even be passively cooled without heatsink.

Power is supplied by a micro USB port, which is the Raspberry Pi 3 Major smartphone chargers compatible from 800 mA, it is a 2.5-A power supply is recommended. The four USB ports can provide a total of a maximum of 1.7 A and devices can also be connected during operation without board reset. Other I / O ports of the small motherboards have not changed and wired data transfers to the network or Internet done thus still using RJ45 LAN port with 100 MBit / s. Also available for picture playback via integrated Broadcom VideoCore IV graphics unit two monitor outputs ready: HDMI and composite video via minijack connector. About HDMI resolutions up to 1,920 x 1,200 pixels supported.

Compatibility Note: Due to the identical screw and connection configuration is the new Raspberry Pi Model B 3 with casings and expansion boards (HATs) for the Raspberry Pi 2 Model B Raspberry Pi and 1 model B + fully compatible!
