Overview

The MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Sea Hawk X with the hybrid cooler design and backplate has a basic clock speed of 1.544 MHz, which is raised to a boost clock of 1.657 MHz via GPU boost 3.0 if necessary and corresponding temperature. Using the GPU Tweak II software, the ASUS graphics card can switch to "OC" mode, which increases the base clock rate to 1,569 MHz and the boost clock to 1,683 MHz.

Details

The 11GB GDDR5X video memory of the graphics card clock with enormous 5.562 MHz (effectively 11.124 MHz) and for the power supply of the 27 cm long graphics card, a 6- and 8-pin PCIe connectors are required. The power supply should supply at least 600 watts.

MSI uses a hybrid cooling solution in the form of Corsairs' Hydro-GPU coolers in the GeForce GTX 1080 Sea Hawk X. A cooler is pre-installed which combines the advantages of a compact water cooling system (LCS) with active ventilation. On the one hand, the GPU, as the most important source of heat, emits its waste heat via a water block to the cooling liquid, which is pumped inside a closed circuit into a 120-radiator and fan - a corresponding installation space must therefore be present in the PC housing! - the cooling capacity is very high in water cooling.

On the other hand, an additional axial fan is provided in the jacket of the cooler which actively cools the memory components and the voltage regulation on the PCB of the card. In sum, this concept results in a high cooling potential at very low noise levels, which also allows significantly increased clock rates compared to the reference model. The LED lighting can be adjusted via the MSI gaming app. The black backplate gives the GTX 1080 Ti additional stability and is decorated with a black-stylized MSI gaming dragon and silver accents.

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics card

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics card is based on the GP102 graphics chip with Pascal architecture and is the gaming flagship of the GeForce GTX 10 series. The GTX 1080 Ti is predestined for playing in 4K / UHD resolution and a very good platform for experiencing the virtual reality - a VR-glasses with huge 11 GB of video memory, enormous 3,584 computation cores (CUDA cores) and high GPU clock rates As the HTC Vive provided.

The production of the graphics chips in the 16-nm-FinFET-method makes it possible to accommodate sensational 12 billion transistors on the 471 mm² GP102 chip. The 16-nm process also adds a low power consumption of 250 watts TDP to the graphics card in combination with the Pascal architecture. This low TDP makes it possible, with a corresponding cooler design, to increase the chip clock over longer periods in the boost.

The GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics card is equipped with gigantic 11GB GDDR5X video memory, which is connected to the chipset via a 384-bit memory interface. GDDR5X-VRAM has a 50 percent increase in bandwidth as a GDDR5-VRAM, resulting in a memory bandwidth of 484 GB / s in combination with the high memory clock rate.

Supported features of the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti include DirectX 12, OpenGL 4.5, Vulkan, 3D Vision, NVIDIA Surround, Tessellation, PhysX, Ansel, CUDA, NVENC, SMX, GPU Boost 2.0, Adaptive Vertical Sync, SLI, Sync, VXGI, Super Resolution, 4K Ultra HD Support, 4K Surround, NVIDIA ShadowPlay, NVIDIA GameStream, HDCP and Simultaneous Multi-Projection 4.0.
Virtual Reality and 4K gaming with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti

Simultaneous Multi-Projection (SMP) version 4.0 allows the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti to save geometry performance during rendering by deriving multiple views from a single geometry calculation. The Pascal architecture supports up to 16 of these simultaneous viewports. SMP is especially interesting for Virtual Reality (VR) and can dramatically improve the performance of the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti when compared to its predecessors.

A component of SMP 4.0 is the so-called lens-matched-shading (LMS), which optimizes the image computation by not calculating image contents, which are blurred by the lenses in the VR glasses. The curved lenses lie between the eye and the display, so that a correct adjustment of the image has to be made.

In order to make full use of the card's full potential, new drivers from NVIDIA or the manufacturer should be downloaded and installed at regular intervals.
