Overview

Intel's 7th processor generation is named "Kaby Lake" and is manufactured in an optimized manufacturing process, compared to its predecessor "Skylake". The 14-nm-plus process allows the Kaby Lake processors to achieve higher clock frequencies at lower voltages and an even higher efficiency. With the same microarchitecture, the performance of the Kaby Lake CPUs compared to its predecessor ("Skylake") was significantly increased. Above all models with the K-suffix benefit from this and offer an impressive OC-potential!

The Intel Core i7-7700K: Kaby Lake and its advantages to the predecessor

The Intel Core i7-7700K has a free multiplier and can thus easily be overclocked. But even without overclocking the Core i7-7700K has a clock frequency of 4.2 GHz, which increases by GPU-Boost 2.0 up to 4.5 GHz if necessary. The Thermal Design Power (TDP) is 91 watts and thus on the same level as Skylake. As a Core i7, this quad-core processor has Intel's Hyper-Threading technology, enabling it to run not just four but eight threads at the same time.

In addition to the increased clock frequency compared to "Skylake", the Kaby Lake processors have SpeedShift 2.0. SpeedSHIFT was introduced with Skylake and is a feature that allows the CPU more control over the clock frequency. This allows processors to react faster to performance requests and thus reduce delays.

SpeedSHIFT 1.0 reduces the time required to reach the maximum clock frequency from approximately 100 milliseconds to approximately 30 milliseconds. This speed is halved again by Speed Shift 2.0 so that the CPU can reach the maximum clock frequency after 10-15 milliseconds after the start of a task.

Socket 1151 Kaby Lake with DDR4-2400 and Intel HD Graphics 630

Kaby Lake continues to support, depending on the motherboard, DDR3L memory, but is generally designed for the faster and more efficient DDR4 memory, which now supports 2,400 MHz as the standard clock. The LGA 1151 is retained as a base, while the Kaby Lake processors are compatible with both 100-series (Sunrise Point) and 200-series ("Union Point") chipsets.

The biggest difference in the 200 series chipset series to the 100 series is the support for Intel's upcoming Optane memory technology, whose "XPoint" memory structure should allow up to ten times the data transfer rate than NAND memory and increased lifetime. HDDs with Optane technology are connected via PCIe connections similar to the extremely fast NVMe-M.2 SSDs.

The integrated graphics unit called Intel HD Graphics 630 (GT2 version) with its 24 Execution Units provides more than enough graphics power for Intel Quick Sync, GPU computing and, of course, one or the other game between. In addition, the DirectX 12 graphics unit with the feature level 12_1, OpenGL 4.4 and OpenCL 2.0 also supports the playback of 4K, UHD resolutions at 60 Hz via Displayport - assuming a corresponding mainboard.

This is the tray version of the processor. A CPU cooler and the packaging are therefore not included in the package.
