The Radeon RX 480 in the reference design achieves a performance of up to 5.8 TFLOPS. The offered Gigabyte Radeon RX 480 G1 Gaming 4GD can even go beyond this value. This is made possible, among other things by the highly overclocked clock of the graphics chip (GPU) of 1,290 MHz and 2,304 shader units of 36 Compute Units (CUs).

For the cooling of the graphics card is the semi-passive Wind Force 2X cooler design manufacturer Gigabyte used, which consists of two heat pipes, two large cooling blocks of aluminum fins and two large fans. The special "Triangle Fan Edge Design" of the fan blades has an up to 23 percent better airflow than conventional fans. The wind force 2X Cooler has an RGB LED illuminated lettering and a backplate ensures increased stability of PCBs.
14-nm FinFET and new GCN generation of Radeon RX 480

The new, improved Graphics Core Next architecture (GCN 1.3) fourth generation introduces new features such as a command processor, a geometry processor, new multimedia cores, an optimized display engine and an improved memory controller. Other supported technologies include Async Compute, volcano, DirectX 12 and AMD's freesync technology.

The new 14-nm FinFET manufacturing process and large jumps in the control, low-power and clock speeds technologies make the Radeon RX 480 with a TDP of 150 watts very energy efficient, especially when compared with the previous models like the Radeon R9 390 (250 Watt TDP) compares. The 14-nm technology allows to accommodate more transistors on a smaller area, while at the same time decreases the energy requirement.

Monitors can be connected via three display port connectors and an HDMI connector on the graphics card. By Eyefinity technology up to four monitors can be connected in a multi-display setup. The HDMI connection in standard 2.0b transmits 4K / UHD resolution at 60 hertz and has HDCP 2.2 to send and receive encrypted signals (4K streaming, 4K Blu-Rays).

In order to exploit the full potential of the card in the future, new drivers from AMD or gigabytes should be downloaded and installed at regular intervals.
