Overview

The AMD Radeon-RX-400 series, named "Polaris", is the first AMD GPU series to be manufactured using the 14-nm FinFET process. In addition to the greatly improved manufacturing process of the chip, the GCN architecture of the fourth generation is used, as with all graphics cards of the RX-400 series. With the Radeon RX 480, AMD offers a low-cost graphics card with VR capability and very high efficiency: a computing power of up to 5.8 TFLOPS is compared to a TDP of only 150 watts!

The features of the Radeon RX 480 STRIX 8G Gaming graphics card from ASUS:

Semi-passive STRIX triple fan cooler with aura LED lighting
Gaming mode (standard) with 1.266 MHz boost clock
OC mode with max. 1.286 MHz Boost clock
Memory rate of 4,000 MHz (effectively 8,000 MHz)
1 × 8 pin power connector
Radeon RX 480: Virtual Reality for Everyone

The ASUS Radeon RX 480 STRIX 8G Gaming reaches a high boost rate of up to 1,266 MHz in normal gaming mode. The graphics card can change to "OC" mode via the GPU Tweak II software. The OC mode increases the maximum boost clock to 1,286 MHz. The storage clock is at 4,000 MHz (effectively 8,000 MHz). A semi-passive cooling design in the "STRIX version" is used to cool the graphics card.

With the DirectCU III cooler design from ASUS, the copper heatspipes are located directly on the graphics chip. The heat dissipated on aluminum fins is swirled by three fans. If the graphics chip is not fully charged and requires less cooling, the fans are either shut down or switched off completely. This allows the graphics card to operate as quietly as possible.

Two 4-pin fan connections allow up to two PWM fan fans to be connected to the graphics card. This makes it possible to adjust the rotational speed of the PWM case fans to the temperature of the pixel accelerator. Since the graphics chip usually produces more heat during the rack than the CPU, this solution ensures a better venting of the housing.

The gray-black radiator cover is equipped with RGB LED lighting. Together with the RGB illuminated Strix logo on the backplate, the Strix graphic card is stylishly set in scene. The RGB LEDs are controlled by the Aura lighting technology. This is also found on various ASUS mainboards. Some of these motherboards even have connectors for RGB LED strips, which then match the mainboard and graphics card for lighting!

One of the declared goals of AMD for the Radeon RX 480 is to make Virtual Reality (VR) accessible to as many players as possible. Based on the Polaris 10 GPU (previously referred to as "Ellesmere"), the Radeon RX 480 fulfills this goal and can combine VR capability with a comparatively low purchase price.

14-nm FinFET and new GCN generation for the Radeon RX 480

The new, enhanced Graphics Core Next architecture (GCN 1.3) of the fourth generation introduces new features such as a command processor, a geometry processor, new multimedia cores, an optimized display engine and an improved memory controller. Other supported technologies include Async Compute, Vulkan, DirectX 12 and AMD's FreeSync technology.

The new 14-nm FinFET fabrication process, as well as large jumps in control, power savings and clock rate technologies make the Radeon RX 480 with a TDP of 150 watts very energy efficient, especially when compared with the previous models like the Radeon R9 390 (250 watt TDP). The 14-nm technology makes it possible to accommodate more transistors on a smaller surface, while at the same time lowering the energy requirement.

Monitors can be connected to the graphics card via three display port connectors, an HDMI connector or a DVI-D connector. The EyeFinity technology allows you to connect up to four screens in a multi-display setup. The HDMI port in standard 2.0b transmits 4K / UHD resolution at 60 hertz and has HDCP 2.2 for sending and receiving encoded signals (4K-streaming, 4K-Blu-Rays).

In order to exploit the full potential of the card in the future, new drivers from AMD or ASUS should be downloaded and installed at regular intervals.
Graphics card exchange without waiting for caseking!

During the warranty period of 2 years from the date of purchase, Caseking will be exchanged directly by the customer for defective graphics cards - ie those with a defect confirmed by us - of all the brands mentioned below directly against new product (if stocked). A sending of the faulty goods to the manufacturer and associated longer waiting times are thus completely eliminated! If the graphic card to be replaced is no longer available or available, we will issue a credit note. Then an alternative graphics card from our range can be selected freely. Any extra costs incurred can be easily reimbursed and any remaining amounts will be refunded by us.
