Details

The OC mode increases the base clock to 1,721 MHz and the boost clock to 1,860 MHz. The memory clock is at 5,500 MHz (effectively 11,000 MHz) or 5,505 MHz (effectively 11,010 MHz) in OC mode, and a 6-pin and 8-pin PCIe connector is required for the power supply of the 29.8-cm-long graphics card. The power supply should supply at least 500 watts. A semi-passive cooling design in the "STRIX" version is used to cool the graphics card.

With the DirectCU III cooler design from ASUS, the copper heatspipes are located directly on the graphics chip. The heat dissipated on aluminum fins is swirled by three fans. If the graphics chip is not fully charged and requires less cooling, the fans are either shut down or completely switched off. This allows the graphics card to operate as quietly as possible. Two 4-pin fan connections allow up to two PWM fan fans to be connected to the graphics card. This makes it possible to adjust the rotational speed of the PWM case fans to the temperature of the pixel accelerator. Since the graphics chip usually produces more heat during the rack than the CPU, this solution ensures a better venting of the housing.

The gray-black radiator grille is equipped with RGB LED lighting. Together with the RGB illuminated Strix logo on the backplate, the Strix graphic card is stylishly set in scene. The RGB LEDs are controlled by the Aura lighting technology. This is also found on various ASUS mainboards. Some of these motherboards even have connectors for RGB LED strips, which then match the mainboard and graphics card for lighting!

The GeForce GTX 1080 "11 Gbps" in detail

The GeForce GTX 1080 high-end graphics card with Pascal architecture is a milestone in NVIDIA's graphics card history. Built in the 16-nm FinFET process, the GP104 graphics chip of the GTX 1080 makes a big step forward in computing performance as well as in energy efficiency, as the "Pascal" GPU architecture features extensive improvements over the predecessor "Maxwell". The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 in the revised "11 Gbps" revision also uses optimized 2nd generation GDDR5X video RAM with a memory clock of 5,500 MHz (effectively 11,000 MHz).

These memory chips are not overclocked 10-Gbps modules, but new native 11-Gbps modules, which at the same frequency with significantly less signal noise than the older 10-Gbps chips can offer. The 8GB GDDR5X video memory of the GTX 1080 "11 Gbps" is connected to the GPU via a 256-bit memory interface, which achieves a memory bandwidth of 352 GB / s. In addition to the video memory, the 2.560 CUDA cores of the GP104 graphics chip are responsible for the brutal gaming power of the GeForce GTX 1080.

The GTX-1080 graphics card family supports DirectX 12 and current gaming technologies, including NVIDIA GameWorks, Warp, Stereo-X, VR-Audio, PhysX and SMP (Simultaneous Multi-Projection). The latter is supported in version 4.0 and offers great advantages, especially for VR, curved displays and multi-display setups. Several monitors were viewed by games as a kind of broad monitor, rendering the GPU just a viewport and creating distortions.

Thanks to SMP, Pascal now supports 16 simultaneous viewports, which allow a much more realistic display on several monitors, on curved displays or in 3D operation. Especially VR benefits from the new technology, because two viewports can be rendered in one run. By using multiple viewports, the rendered image also comes with a smaller number of calculated pixels, which greatly improves VR performance.

Despite the extremely high computing power and memory expansion with 8GB GDDR5X VRAM, the GeForce GTX 1080 "11 Gbps" with a TDP of only 180 watts, which is compared to the direct predecessor GTX 980 only 15 watts more - at significantly higher speed. Thanks to the reworked power supply of the GTX 1080 PCB, the energy efficiency of the GTX 980 increases by a whole six percent thanks to the new five-phase supply (in the reference layout) of the GPU and the various optimizations on the PCB.

The GeForce GTX 1080 "11 Gbps" has the latest connections. For the image transmission of 4K / Ultra HD resolutions at 60 hertz, a total of two DisplayPort 1.4 and two HDMI 2.0b connections are available, the latter of which have HDCP 2.2 and thus can send and receive encrypted signals (4K-Blu -Rays / 4K streams). Alternatively, the GTX 1080 has a DVI-D output (dual link).

In order to make full use of the card's full potential, new drivers from NVIDIA or ASUS should be downloaded and installed at regular intervals.
