Overview

The AMD Radeon R300-Series (codename ?? Pirate Islands ??) replaces the legacy of the R200-series (?? Volcanic Islands ??). From the economical, inexpensive entry-level graphics card up to the high-end cars with eight gigabytes of memory, AMD has made here based on the proven Graphics Core Next (CGN) architecture a broad portfolio to his feet, where for all claims an appropriate Map can be found.

Details

The Radeon R9 390X is the top model of the series. It has the ?? Grenada XT ?? - GPU which a whopping 2,816 shader units provides that communicate via a 512-bit wide memory interface with extremely 8 gigabytes of GDDR5 memory. The clock of the GPU is this card from ASUS at 1050 MHz, the memory operates at 3000 (effective 6000) MHz - thus, the Radeon R9 390X its predecessor, the R9 290X, clearly in the shadows.

To spite of the enormous power that is possible thanks to this technical equipment to enable a cool and quiet, ASUS sets in this variant of R9 390X to a ?? DirectCU II ?? baptized, especially effective 2-slot cooling solution with an ultra-chic aluminum heat sink, sitting on the two large fans. One of them is designed as part of the "CoolTech Fan" technology as a hybrid fan between axial and centrifugal fans to combine the advantages of both. Several copper heatpipes are - flattened at the appropriate place - directly on the GPU (= DirectCU = DC) and run the heat quickly from this ab.Damit the card is even under full load very quiet, even more so but idle - thanks to AMD ZeroCore Power and AMD PowerPlay saves particularly much power here. A chic black aluminum backplate to protect PCBs and for additional cooling completes the package.

The bandwidth for the exchange between video card and motherboard or CPU falls from high, because the R9 390X brings the latest interface standard PCI Express 3.0 with up, whereby - given a suitable residual Hardware - the bandwidth over PCIe 2.0 to 16 GB / s doubles. Even otherwise, all modern standards are supported - DirectX 12, AMD's own Mantle API, DisplayPort, FreeSync and Ultra-HD / 4K resolutions are of course for the R9 390X no strangers.

In addition, the card thanks CrossFireX and Eyefinity is very flexible when it comes to support for multi-GPU setups and multiple screens. These can be controlled via two DVI and one HDMI port and one DisplayPort. Power is provided via a 6-pin and one 8-pin PCIe connector for operating a power supply with at least 750 watts is recommended. In order to exploit the full potential of the card in the future, new drivers from AMD or ASUS should be downloaded and installed at regular intervals.
